Wodiska Named President of Virginia School Boards Association

Williamsburg (November 18, 2011) – Joan Wodiska, who has served on the Falls Church City School Board since 2004, has been named the President of the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) at the association’s Annual Convention taking place November 16-18 in Williamsburg.
Wodiska has held several leadership positions in VSBA and on the local level. She became a member of the Board of Directors of the VSBA in 2007, and served two years as a Regional Chairman, one year as Chairman of the Legislative Positions Committee, and one as a Member At-Large.
“We are delighted to have Joan, who has such a history of board leadership and advocacy on behalf of students in public education, as VSBA’s new President,” said Barbara Coyle, Executive Director of VSBA. “Joan brings her ability to create an effective vision for public education and her skill at reaching those goals to the arena of local school governance.”
In her day job, Wodiska serves as the director of the Education, Early Childhood, and Workforce Committee at the National Governors Association (NGA), where she leads and oversees all education and labor-related legislative and regulatory issues for the nation’s governors. Most recently, she led NGA’s work on the creation and implementation of the State Fiscal Stabilization Fund in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“Student success must be the priority,” Wodiska said. “I look forward, as VSBA President, to hearing from and working with educational leaders across the state to encourage new investments in innovation to promote student learning.”
In addition to Wodiska, Roy Boyles of Warren County was elected President-Elect. VSBA’s 2010-2011 President, Jeff Bain of Pulaski, will serve on the Board of Directors as Immediate Past President. Lori Vaught of Roanoke City; Bill Kidd of Wythe County; Ellery Sedgwick of Prince Edward County; and Betty Covington of Prince William County were all elected to one-year terms as Members At-Large of the Board.
President Wodiska has appointed Juandiego Wade of Charlottesville City to serve as Chairman of the Federal Relations Committee; Karen Gerlach of Radford City to serve as Chairman of the Legislative Positions Committee; and Roy Boyles of Warren County to serve as the Finance/Audit Chairman.
VSBA’s 2011-2012 Regional Chairmen are: David Christian of Buckingham County; Kenneth Lewis of Petersburg City; Kathy Rogers of Henry County; Myrtle Phillips of Northumberland County; Sanders Henderson of Washington County; Scott Albrecht of Manassas City; Roger Long of Halifax County; Elsie Dennis of Surry County; and Kerri Wilson of Harrisonburg City.
NSBA’s Ex-officio Voting Director will be Barbara Haywood of (York County) as a member of the National School Boards Association’s Board of Directors.
