Cheney, Kane earn All-State honor

Senior Lauren Kane and junior Stephanie Cheney won first team all-state honors for basketball. This is Cheney’s second consecutive year of winning this honor and Kane’s first year. Head coach LaBryan Thomas was also named the single-A Division-Two girls Coach of the Year.

YoutubeUpdatedBusloads of Mustangs charged down to Virginia Commonwealth University for the basketball state tournaments Friday, March 9 and Saturday, March 10. Both the girls and boys basketball teams competed in the semi-finals and finals of their respective brackets.

With multiple games in a short period of time, many Mason students found themselves traveling to and from Richmond several times over the weekend to see the teams play.

Lasso Online sports reporter Graham Parvinkarimi made a video recap of the boys semi-finals game, the girls state final, and the boys state final. Watch them to see how it all turned out.

2012 VHSL Group A Division Two Runners-Up

The George Mason Mustangs finished a stellar 26-6 season as the 2012 VHSL Group A Division Two Runners-Up in their first appearance in the championship game since 1955. The squad fell to Lancaster 66-51. Noel Osbusan (12 above) led Mason scoring with 21. Mason's season long sharp shooter, senior Nate Ogle, broke his right wrist during a previous game and could only watch. Junior Will Nunley took up the slack with 17 points, nine rebounds.

The George Mustang Lady Mustangs captured their third VHSL State Group A Division Two Championship in four years, defeating Region D champion Gate City 50-47. Senior Lauren Kane led Mason scoring with 16 including two clutch free throws in the final seconds to give the Mustangs the breathing room to hold the lead long enough for the clock to run out.

Bb3_7The Mustangs got a chance to play on the biggest of stages Saturday, March 3, 2012 when they faced Essex High School at Virginia Commonwealth University. For the seniors on the team, this was a chance at redemption after suffering a heart-breaking loss at VCU last year.

Both teams came out with passion as they knew that a chance to be one of the final four teams left in the state was at stake. Lasso Online sports reporter Graham Parvinkarimi was at the game to film the action. Watch the video to see which team prevailed.

GM LogoThe George Mason Boys and Girls basketball teams return to the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Final Four this week after two quarterfinal wins in Richmond, Saturday.

The Mustangs punched their tickets to the final four with a boys victory, 56-52 over Essex, and the Lady Mustangs defeating Sussex Central 66-36.
