Seniors are reminded to continue to sign up for the senior service project every Tuesday after school to prepare and deliver meals to the Falls Church Homeless Shelter.  In groups of four to six, and with a budget of about $100 per week, seniors, along with a teacher sponsor, decide on a meal to make, and deliver it by 5:30 p.m. “If you haven't helped out before, or if you want to do it again, sign up for a date! You don't need to know how to cook or anything, just meet in the TLC kitchens!” explained Hannah Beaman, one of the organizers of the project.  To sign up, seniors are encouraged to use the poll set up in the Class of 2013 group on Facebook, but can also simply talk to senior class co-sponsors Mr. Erik Healey and Mr. Will Snyder.

New item hits the menu

The Food Service Department would like to announce a new entrée that will be introduced on the menu. It is Thai pasta and will be offered in both vegan and traditional options. The traditional version will have optional chicken for those who want to request it.

Students have already tried the new pasta, and the reaction has been lukewarm

Freshman, Nathalie Diaz said the pasta was cold and a little hard.

“It is pretty good but it is cold,” says freshman Katy Sweeney.

Overall, the students of George Mason think the new Thai pasta is just ok.  The Mustang Café is always looking to improve and will address this issue.

The Student Council Association paid a visit to the Sunrise Retirement Home on North Washington Street December 14, 2012. They threw them a brief holiday celebration with music and cookie decorating. The residents seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves, and many even sang along to the traditional holiday carols with nostalgic expressions on their faces.

Student lunch famine is resolved

Johnson_Lunch Portions_FPAlthough coming back from winter break is never easy for students, many will be glad to know that lunch will be plenty fulfilling. The USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) originally made a rule requiring a maximum portion of protein and grain, so food portions for hamburgers were limited to 2 oz. The rule was then changed which influenced the decision to increase food portions for students at GMHS. The burgers will now be increased to 4 oz.

“The cafeteria made this change before the rule was actually changed because many students reported to still be hungry,” commented Food Services Director Richard Kane.

The cafeteria is considering leaving the National School Lunch Program. They are also asking for feedback from students,” added Kane.

The USDA is coming out with new rules for next school year and portion sizes may change again in the future.

To further show our support for Sandy Hook Elementary School, Mason students had the opportunity to write letters and make cards to send to Newtown, Connecticut Thursday, December 20, during Mustang Block in Mr. Erik Healey’s classroom. Pictured here is junior Huntley Campbell.

The letters were collected by the Student Council Association and provided students with a way to give our condolences to everyone affected by the tragedy and the entire Newtown community.

The end of the world!

fireplace1According to the Meso-American calendar, the world is supposed to end December 21, 2012 in a series of unknown catastrophes beginning on Friday.  This could dramatically change the plans many students and teachers have this week and for their winter breaks.

“I would throw a huge party then I’d do a back flip on my motorcycle,” said Callum Bartlett, a junior.

“I would do nothing if the world ended because I would be dead, but I am having a pizza party to celebrate,” said Mr. Jamie Lahy, a special education teacher.

Though it is almost certain that the world will end according to the Meso-American calendar, some have tried to argue.  NASA tried to explain very scientifically, that there will only be a winter solstice. They also say that many expert scientists highly doubt any threat to earth.

How can anyone be sure though?  We can be sure that Friday will be an interesting day either way.
