Matthew Irvine Wins School-Wide Desktop Design Contest

Print
background_smMatthew Irvine, a freshman, has won the school-wide computer background design contest and his design will be featured as the official default background of all school student computers starting next fall. "It will be cool to see my work on the computer at school everyday," says Matthew, who first learned about computer graphics in his seventh grade web design elective. "I became interested in my web design class but after that I mostly taught myself. I used tutorials on the internet to learn more later but I didn't use a tutorial for this design. I never really had an idea exactly; I just started playing around with things. I made a different design at first but I didn't like it. I ended up making the second one over a period of time."

This is the second year this contest has been offered to students but it is not the first time Matthew has entered. "I submitted last year but didn't win," he says. "I'll probably submit again the following year as well." If Matthew chooses to enter the contest again next year, don't be surprised by a newly developed style, "I don't really have a style," he admits. "The design I submitted last year looked much different than the winner and the design I chose not to submit was different as well."

"It had really great design elements," said senior Christina Dacanay who was among the journalism students who voted for Matthew's design. Of his various pieces, Matthew made the right choice by submitting this winning piece, which students will enjoy throughout the 09-10 school year.

You Can’t Take It With You Premieres This Weekend

Cant_Take_With_You_001Thursday through Saturday of this weekend, Mason's spring comedy, You Can't Take it with You by Koffman and Hart, premieres. While the five dollar admission price is cheap, the show is indisputably worthwhile. Since the play has no real leads, the stage is constantly filled with ballet dancers, fireworks, live snakes, wrestling, and manuscripts.

The production takes place in 1930's New York in a conflict much like that of the film Meet the Parents. While the doors open at 7:00, the show begins at 7:30 on all three nights. Break a leg, Mustangs!

Commencement Speaker Announced

The commencement speaker for the class of 2009's graduation will be Scott Blake Harris.

Harris is the managing partner of the Harris, Wiltshire & Grannis law firm and was recently nominated by President Obama to be the General Counsel for the Department of Energy. Harris writes and speaks widely on communications issues. He has written monthly columns on communications regulation and policy for Space News, Aviation Week, Communications Week International, and Satellite Communications. He has also made appearances in the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Times.

Class sponsors and faculty members Ebby Adukkalil and Brad McAdam asked the seniors for commencement speaker ideas, but only a couple of the students followed through. Senior Elisa Aronica's mom worked at Harris's firm.  Aronica had heard him speak before and thought that graduation would be an appropriate time for him to address a crowd of young adults.  "While none of the seniors know Mr. Harris, we are confident that his background and experience will result in an enlightening speech," said McAdam.

The seniors are excited to hear what Harris will speak about at graduation. Harris will be speaking on June 17 at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. when the class of 2009 takes to the stage for the last time.

Friendly Green Reminder

Recycling_005_2For those of you who haven't noticed, there are two bins for disposables in every classroom. One has a green top with two circular holes in it for bottles, the other is a normal- looking trashcan for - you guessed it - trash.

So you might ask, well where does the paper recycling go? The answer is, in the bin with the bottles! The Falls Church Recycling Center combined the two receptacles almost four months ago, but George Mason students are still dumping old worksheets and newspapers into the trash bins. Help our school take a stand against environmental destruction and recycle your bottles AND paper into the green labeled bins.

Prom King and Queen Announced Saturday

After weeks of anticipation, Louis Henninger and Sally Blakemore were declared King and Queen of Prom Saturday night aboard the Cherry Blossom Yacht in Old Town Alexandria. Amid cheers and pounding music, Principal Byrd announced all of the Prom court and then the two winners.

The annual event was an overall success even with the downpour of rain which kept students off of the yacht's many decks. Sponsored by the Junior class, there were dessert trays from Whole Foods, photography by Lifetouch, and plenty of music and refreshments.
