A cold start

George Mason’s girls lacrosse team met yesterday in room B108 to discuss their upcoming season. Why so early, one might ask; the team lost 11 seniors last year and is trying to rebuild.

Starting to prepare for the spring season in January will help the team get the word out to new players who need more practice and would allow time for improvement, according to senior Abby Johansen.

Senior Amanda Rolander has been part of the varsity team since her freshman year and is adamant about recruiting new players for the team. She has gone as far as to offer practice times at TJ elementary on her weekends to help new players become more familiar with the game.

Rolander said, “The lacrosse team is really important to me and starting things early will give us a good shot at our season this year.”

Sophomore Emily Bell, who joined the squad her eighth grade year, said, “I’m looking forward to lacrosse, but I’m trying to enjoy my off season and watch some basketball games.  I admire a lot of the team member’s dedication and think everything they are doing is great. I’m just not ready to play in the ice or snow!”

Some might think it is too early to start practicing, but to others this is pure dedication. We will be keeping a close watch on our lady Mustangs and look forward to the season. Those of you who are interested in playing lacrosse, why not give it a try?

On Friday, January 14, the Mason boys basketball team (9-3) competed in a heated game against Madison County’s Mountaineers (4-10). Madison County presented the visiting Mustangs with a packed crowd of hundreds cheering from the stands. The devastating noise provided more pressure for the Mustangs; however, the boys were unfazed.

The first half was dominated by junior Philippe Griffiths who scored four three-pointers, and junior forward Nate Ogle scoring 13 points as well as an incredible 15 rebounds. The Mustangs struggled through the first half, but the score swayed in favor of the Mustangs during the second half with a 24-20 lead.

Although the Mustangs entered the third quarter with a lead, they were forced to fight to hold their own. Jeremy Stewart dropped 14 points in the second half while our defense continued to play aggressively, contributing to the Mustangs' 12 point victory in the 59-47 win. Philippe Griffiths finished with a total of 17 points and 6 rebounds.
Senior Brandon Alexander, number 13, was unable to play due to a recovering ankle injury. Madison coaches were surprised not to see number 13 on the courts playing his normal forward position, and they went as far as to inquire about his health.

When asked about his return, Alexander said, “I didn’t play this game but I’m proud to know the other team’s coaches were worried about me, and I can't wait to play against Clarke in the next game!”

George Mason will host Clarke County (9-5) on Wednesday night with a MEH tipoff at 7:30. Clarke, like Mason, is 3-0 in the Bull Run play.

Crippling winter storms that have terrorized the east coast throughout January have finally impacted Falls Church City. Due to high accumulations of ice on the city roads and sidewalks Falls Church City Public Schools were closed on Tuesday, January 17. The icy roads also resulted in the girls varsity basketball game against Clarke County being cancelled; it will be rescheduled.

The girls game against Clarke County was to jump start a week which has been renamed “rivalry week” by players and students alike. The boys varsity basketball team is scheduled to play Clarke County at 7:30 in the Mustang gym on Wednesday, January 18 and as of now the game is still on. The girls team will cap off the week traveling to Strasburg on Friday to take on the Rams.
