Senior night to take place on Homecoming

Print

Traditionally, Senior Night is the night where senior athletes are recognized for their talent and dedication to each of their teams. Typically, this senior oriented night is held on the last home football game of the season, but this year, the Homecoming game will be on the same night.

The Homecoming game was originally going to be on October 14, but had to be rescheduled due the opposing team disbanding their football team. The Senior Night game was then rescheduled to October 21.

Although the fact that these two special occasions will be on the same day, this does not affect the majority of students.  It was disappointing for the senior athletes who were looking forward to senior night, but many have adjusted to it.

Senior cheerleader Alyson Aguerrebere said, “Originally I thought that having Senior Night on Homecoming would be really bad - because it kind of takes away from the senior cheerleaders and senior football players. But after I found out that it'll be before the game, I was okay with it. I mean it’s not ideal, but they did the best with what they had."

Mason fans-- be sure to arrive early to the Homecoming/Senior Night game to support your senior athletes and the football team. The senior portion of the game will be before the game starts, and the usual Homecoming Court appearances will be during halftime, including performances by the cheerleading team and dance team.

volleyballeditedThe girls varsity volleyball team came out on top during Thursday’s match, beating Manassas Park in all three games. Mason currently has a record nine wins to four losses, and Manassas Park has a record of two wins to ten losses.

When asked about the game and the team’s performance, Coach Healey said, ‘It’s always nice to win. We started a little slow, but came together and it was a good victory. What was amazing was that in the first game, Jade Taylor, a junior, served 19 of our 25 points, including 11 aces.”

As for Manassas Park, their coach, Katie Keifer, said, “ I think we had a lot of shining moments, and I’m looking forward to playing them again.”

Mason vs. Madison

Mason will be facing off against Madison County High School this Friday, September 30, 2011. The Mustangs are currently 1-3 this season while Madison is 2-3.

Even though Madison has played and won more games than us so far this season, it’s no reason to fret. Both of our schools have played Luray and both won by a substantial amount. So in that respect we’re pretty equal.

Varsity football player and senior Bryce Cooper said that “it doesn’t matter how they’ve done before, it just matters how Mason plays that night.”

So come out and support our Mustangs as they try to gain their second win this season, and just have a good time watching the game, listening to our amazing pep band led by Mrs. M.J. West, or hanging out with your friends while displaying school spirit.

Two new rivals enter Bull Run District

Beginning in the 2011 school year, George Mason will face two new foes in the Bull Run athletic district. Both schools have moved down to single A recently but have not changed their school size at the same time.

One of the schools is William Monroe High School which is in Greene County. Greene County is a staggering 95 mile and nearly two-hour drive from Falls Church. The school enrolls less then 1000 students currently but is planning to expand.

Greene County’s athletic director Katie Brunelle recently told the Greene County Record that “I don’t think we’re going to walk into the Bull Run district and immediately start winning.”

The school’s football coach also told the Greene County Record “We know we’re going into an awfully competitive district.” Their school mascot is a Dragon and the school’s colors are green and white.

The other school joining the district is Central High School, which is located in Woodstock, VA. That is also a hike away being 85 miles away and an hour and a half drive away from George Mason. The high school is currently enrolled with about 750 in grades 9-12.

The school is also excited to get out of Group AA after a computer error placed them in Group AA instead of the Group A district. Their school’s mascot is an Eagle and the school colors are blue, white, and gold.
