Matthew Irvine, a freshman, has won the school-wide computer background design contest and his design will be featured as the official default background of all school student computers starting next fall. "It will be cool to see my work on the computer at school everyday," says Matthew, who first learned about computer graphics in his seventh grade web design elective. "I became interested in my web design class but after that I mostly taught myself. I used tutorials on the internet to learn more later but I didn't use a tutorial for this design. I never really had an idea exactly; I just started playing around with things. I made a different design at first but I didn't like it. I ended up making the second one over a period of time."
This is the second year this contest has been offered to students but it is not the first time Matthew has entered. "I submitted last year but didn't win," he says. "I'll probably submit again the following year as well." If Matthew chooses to enter the contest again next year, don't be surprised by a newly developed style, "I don't really have a style," he admits. "The design I submitted last year looked much different than the winner and the design I chose not to submit was different as well."
"It had really great design elements," said senior Christina Dacanay who was among the journalism students who voted for Matthew's design. Of his various pieces, Matthew made the right choice by submitting this winning piece, which students will enjoy throughout the 09-10 school year.
