Senior night is one of the most important and well attended games in high school basketball. How would you feel if your rival team brought their mascot to your final home game? This is what will be happening while the girls basketball team plays at Clarke on the opposing school’s senior night.
Eighth grader Katie Goodwin and sophomore Isabella Dod are planning on cheering for the varsity game while wearing a Mustang Sally costume. Clarke will be sure to pack their gym with passionate fans; the last thing they will want to see is Mason’s Mustang Sally.
While others may be scared of this task, Dod said, “I’m not afraid of them, they should be scared of us.”
Clarke fans could read this as disrespectful, especially because it is their senior night; however, many players on the girls junior varsity basketball team said that they viewed it as a sign of support and encouragement for their team instead of disrespect towards Clarke.
Senior Ryan Moot, who recently played at Clarke against the school’s boys varsity basketball team during their senior night said “the crowd was packed full of parents mostly, so they probably won’t get that offended by Mustang Sally. But it’s still disrespectful.”
Senior night should be a memorable experience; will having a rival mascot at Clarke affect this? Come support the girls varsity basketball team this Friday at 7:30 p.m. to find out.
