After being postponed due to rainy weather, the annual junior versus senior powder puff football game took place on Monday, October 4. Despite the freezing weather, both teams gave it their all and battled it out for the win.
In the spirit of traditional football games, each team had their own cheerleading squad, consisting of boys from both grades doing stunts and lifts. The senior boys managed to pull off a decent human pyramid under the instruction of senior and varsity cheerleader Elsie Poon. A cheer-off took place at half-time, gaining applause from spectators in the stands.
And no football game is complete without sports commentators. Seniors Daniel Fletcher and J Rodock teamed up with junior Max Kaplow and SCA sponsors Erik Healey and Mark Sokolowski to report on the event. Parents in the stands were rewarded for sitting in the cold with funny jokes and arguments from the commentators. Sokolowski, a physics teacher at Mason, even supplied a “Physics and Football” segment.
One senior commentator quipped, “Let’s hope the juniors can play as well as they decorate their hallway,” remarking on the juniors’ last place finish in the spirit week hall decorating contest.
The seniors’ offensive and defensive lines were strong enough to keep them ahead the whole game, allowing the coaches to give every member of the team a chance to play. The junior girls put up a good front for the most part, though their plays were no match against the senior girls’ skill and determination to win.
“The seniors played a really good first half and we came out really strong,” said senior coach Tyler Duncan, “but then we started to get bogged down and had a few big penalties.” He went on to add, “I never really had any doubts, though, because I knew our defense was lights out and [the seniors] proved it in the game.”
The seniors pulled through with a win of 12-0, with touchdowns from seniors Hannah Walker and Violet Miller.
“I guess they just couldn’t get on our level,” senior coach Mikey Larcamp said of the class of 2012. The junior girls will have a chance to redeem themselves when they play the class of 2013 next fall as seniors.
